Prof. Harrison B. Prosper from the Florida State University, currently supported by the INFN Sezione di Bari, will held a short series of lectures on probability and statistics from Monday 23 May 2016 to Wednesday 25 May 2016 .Slides and tutorials can be found at:
Title
Probability, Statistics, and All That: The Basic Minimum
Abstract
These lectures cover the principles and practices of statistics that are most relevant for working physicists. The first lecture discusses the basic ideas of descriptive statistics, probability, and likelihood. The second lecture covers the key ideas in the frequentist approach to statistics, including confidence limits, profile likelihoods, p-values, and hypothesis testing. The third lecture covers inference in the Bayesian approach. Throughout, real-world examples are used to illustrate the practical application of the ideas. Since I am a particle physicist, the examples will mostly come from my field. However, the ideas are very broadly applicable. No previous knowledge is assumed.
