{"id":1989,"date":"2016-05-12T15:51:27","date_gmt":"2016-05-12T15:51:27","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/dottorato.fisica.uniba.it\/?p=1989"},"modified":"2016-05-12T15:59:04","modified_gmt":"2016-05-12T15:59:04","slug":"seminar-on-network-physiology","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/dottorato.fisica.uniba.it\/?p=1989","title":{"rendered":"Seminar on NETWORK PHYSIOLOGY"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>On Wednesday 25 April,time: 15.30, room: Aula A of Physics Department,<\/p>\n<p>Prof. <strong>Plamen\u00a0 Ivanov<\/strong><br \/>\nDirector of the Keck Laboratory for Network Physiology<br \/>\n(Physics Department, Boston University and Harvard Medical School)<br \/>\nand founder of NETWORK PHYSIOLOGY\u00a0will give a seminar on:<\/p>\n<p>N<strong>etwork Physiology: from complex dynamics of individual systems<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong> to networks of organ interactions and the Human Physiolome.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Abstract<br \/>\nThe human organism is an integrated network where complex\u00a0 physiological<br \/>\nsystems, each with its own regulatory mechanisms,\u00a0 continuously interact<br \/>\nto optimize and coordinate their function.<br \/>\nOrgan-to-organ interactions occur at multiple levels and\u00a0 spatiotemporal<br \/>\ntime scales to produce distinct physiologic<br \/>\nstates: wake and sleep; light and deep sleep; consciousness and<br \/>\nunconsciousness. Disrupting organ communications can lead to<br \/>\ndysfunction of individual systems or to collapse of the entire<br \/>\norganism. Yet, we know almost nothing about the nature of the<br \/>\ninteractions between diverse organ systems and their collective role\u00a0 in<br \/>\nmaintaining health.<br \/>\nThrough the prism of concepts and approaches originating in nonlinear<br \/>\ndynamics, biomedical engineering and statistical physics, we will<br \/>\npresent basic characteristics of\u00a0 individual organ systems, distinct<br \/>\nforms of pairwise<br \/>\ncoupling between systems, and a new framework to identify and quantify<br \/>\nnetworks of interactions among diverse organ systems.<br \/>\nWe will demonstrate how physiologic network topology and systems<br \/>\nconnectivity relate to physiologic state and function, and we will<br \/>\ndiscuss implications for further theoretical developments and\u00a0 practical<br \/>\napplications within the context of the emerging field of\u00a0 Network<br \/>\nPhysiology.
