It conducts theoretical and experimental research in the fields of subnuclear, nuclear and astroparticle physics. They use the world&#8217;s largest and most complex scientific instruments to study the basic constituents of matter \u2013 the fundamental particles. \u00a0Many research group from the Physics\u00a0Departement in Bari are collaborating with CERN (see details in the research activity of the web page. Research is focused on Quantum Technologies and Applications, Quantum Field Theory, Quantum Phase Transitions and Complexity, and has produced a large number (about 100) of joint publications. The scientific activities have been supported by Joint Projects of the Italian Institute for Nuclear Physics (INFN), Internationalization Projects of the Italian Ministry of University and Research (MIUR), and Significant Research Projects of the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MAE), as well as Japanese funding agencies. Merlin\u201d, University and Politecnico of Bari, Italy. A first step is the recruitment on 50 percent for two years of Antonio Ancona from CNR-IFN at the Physics Department of Bari as a Professor at the University West. He will work together with the welding automation group in a project &#8220;Hybrid sensing for understanding of laser welding technology for process control (Hy-Las)&#8221; financed by the V\u00e4stra G\u00f6taland Region MoRE program, aiming to strengthen the PTW group and to increase the networking between the two research organizations. Spagnolo is strongly collaborating with the Rice University Laser Science Group of Prof. Frank K. Tittel, Faculty of Electrical and Computer Engineering (ECE). This joint research activity is aimed to the study, design and realization of novel trace gas detectors with record sensitivity levels. In the framework of this collaboration, PhD students working in the group of Prof. Spagnolo have the possibility to spend up to 18 months working in the laser Science Group labs at Rice University. UMBC will remit tuition cost up to 20 credits per year and will also provide the candidate, during the period of residence in the USA, with the conventional stipend assigned to Graduated Research Assistant.The preparation of dissertation will be pursued at both the Universities. We have established a joint research activities \u00a0and technological development innovations in the field of optical gas sensors and in particular on the development and implementation of novel techniques for gas sensing and highly sensitive trace gas sensors.
